Bali Pass Trek

Right from the Tons Valley to the Yamuna Valley, the Bali Pass trek is an ancient hiking route. The trek begins from Sankri and goes through the Govind National Park which is famous for its wildflowers. This trek gives an opportunity along the trail to visit the sacred lake at Ruinsara and explore the less known routes through the Yamunotri Pass. Aside from the seclusion and the difficult climb to the mountain, the Bali Pass hike has a lot to offer. The massive Swargarohini or Bandarpunch ridges nearly constantly surround us.

We shall get a better look at Kalanag (Black Peak). We will be spending the entire day at Ruinsara Glacial Lake. Lake Ruinsara is breathtaking in its beauty and majesty, and it is tied with a legendary narrative. The Dev Thach alpine meadow in the center of the Ruinsara forest is worth a visit. We will witness the source of the Yamunotri River and visit the holy shrine of Yamunotri Devi near the conclusion of our trip across the Bali Pass. Bali Pass is a vivid tapestry of natural beauty.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1- Drive Dehradun to Sankri

Our first stop before this exciting trek would be a small village called Sankri. This is a tiny Uttarkashi hamlet nestled in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. The route from Dehradun to Sankri passes through gorgeous areas like Kempty waterfalls, Nainbagh, Mussoorie, and others.

It is encircled by the summits of Swargarohini and other Greater Himalayan peaks. The twilight sky will have formed spectacular sceneries by the time you get to Sankri. This is an excellent starting point for forthcoming adventures. We will stay in hotels or homestays on the first day.

Day 2- Drive 12km to Taluka, Trek 12km to Seema

After enjoying a hearty breakfast in Sankri, we will leave early morning from there and drive to Taluka. Taluka is where the trek actually begins. The 12-kilometer-long driveway winds between big streams, bamboo, and deodar trees. It’s like navigating a series of mountain turns. We will start our trek for Seema which would be a 12 km trek. Seema lies on the right bank of the Supin River and we will be trekking through the dense forest covered with Walnuts, Chestnuts, Willows, and other beautiful coniferous trees. After a few hours of trekking, we will reach the Ganga village and have a glimpse of the typical Himalayan architecture.

After another hour of trekking, we will be reaching closer to a wooden bridge that will take us to the Ganga village. This place is home to about 200 families and is very popular for its unique architecture representing the Garhwali culture. We will be spending the night at Seema campsite and rest well for the next big day.

Day 3- Trek 8km from Seema to Rainbasera Waterfall

Begin at the outset to go to our first big site, Devsu Bugyal. Begin by strolling to the left all along Supin River. The route begins to ascent on this day and grows steeper until near Devsu Bugyal. There will also be rocks along the way after you get to the Ruinsara valley.

Devs Bugyal is another 30 minutes of flat walking way. This Bugyal is 2-kilometer-long pastureland where you may unwind a little. The meadows provide excellent views of Bandarpoonch and Kala Nag (The Black Peak). From here, the trail abruptly ceases until we reach the riverbank. The route is paved with stones and is slick. We will cross a bridge again here. Take in the beautiful scenery around you. The route continues on a difficult ascent from here. We’ll spend the night at Rainbasera. Don’t forget to take in the sunset over the raging river. Many hikers enjoy a peaceful period among the stones near the river’s mouth. Tents and camps will be used for lodging.

Day 4- Trek 10km to Thange Camp, via Ruinsara Lake

Camps

Today we will proceed towards the Thanga camp passing through Ruinsara Lake. This lake is situated at an approximate altitude of 3,600 meters and adjacent to the raging waters of river Supin, lying 100 meters below and next to a visible ridge covered in rhododendron forests.

We are required to descend down to the river bank and climb up again as we proceed further into the valley. We will be camping here in the meadow. One can also see a partial glimpse of the Saptrishi Kund while descending to the other side of the valley.

Day 5: Thanga Camp Acclimatization day

Camping at bali

Today would be a day of relaxation and resting and getting acclimatized to the weather here. We can stroll around for some sightseeing and just get rejuvenated to start the trek the next day.

Day 6: Trek 6km from Thange Camp to Bali Pass Summit Camp

This would be a 5 km trek which takes about 5-6 hours in total. We will be passing through Odari in this trek. This is a slightly challenging trek with boulders and rocks on the way. We will be camping here at Bali Pass Summit Camp along the glacial moraine.

This is the most unique location to camp at with the valley below and passing behind you. Camping at this altitude is a new experience that very few treks offer.

Day 7- Trek 11km from Bali Pass Summit Camp to Dhamni Camp

Today is the most prominent day of this trek and we will reach the summit today. The highest point of this trek touches an altitude of 16,200 ft. after making it to the summit we will descend down to our basecamp at Lower Dhamni Camp which sits at an elevation of 11,100 ft. this would be the longest and the most challenging trek so far.

trek bali pass

This entire trail is usually filled with snow. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to reach the summit from the base camp and once at the top, the views leave everyone dumbstruck.

A 360-degree view of the Himalayan peaks like Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, and other ranges of the Garhwal Himalayas from the top will enthrall your heart. The trail to the summit is a challenging one as it gets narrowed while going upwards. Overcoming these challenges and making it to the summit leaves one fulfilled with a sense of accomplishment and unmatched joy and it all feels very rewarding.

While descending down to Lower Dhamni Camp, the descent is very steep and technical. After covering this challenging descent we will rest in Lower Dhamni Camp before resuming our trek and reaching our base camp.

Day 8- Trek to Jankichatti via Yamunotri, drive back to Dehradun

This is the last day of our trek. The descent down is fairly easy as compared to other days. The entire trail is through the cemented path and there are mild ascents too occasionally till Yamunotri and it takes about 1-2 hours to reach Yamunotri temple.

We will make a stop at the temple and offer our prayers. From there we shall be taking the regular pilgrims route to Janki Chatti. The trek is about 5 km and transportation arrangements are made there to drive back to Dehradun. With a beautiful and offbeat trekking experience and some amazing memories, we will all head back home.
