TUNGNATH TREK

Tungnath, also known as one of the Panch (five) Kedars, is considered s one of the easiest trek with the most stunning views. It is said that from the summit of this trek one can spot almost all the major peaks of the eastern and western Uttarakhand. The Tungnath Chandrashila trek begins from Chopta, a small place in Uttrakhand while the Deorital trek begins from Sari village. Both of these hikes are typically done together. We’ve already noted Tungnath’s significance as one of the five Kedars. Deoriatal, on the other hand, is famous for its lake set against the majestic Himalayan peaks. For beginners who are starting their trekking journey, this trek is an ideal one. The trek is an amalgamation of all that the Garhwal Himayalan region has to offer. In winters this trek is much more beautiful with a view of snow- capped mountains.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Sari Village

We start early on our first day and commence the journey by driving from Dehradun to Sari village which is a distance of about 200 kms and take almost 5-6 hours to cover. Sari village is located at an altitude of 2000 mts above the sea level in Ukhimath Block of Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. This place is often the base camp for Deori tal lake trek. it is a small village surrounded by farm fields from all sides. The Sari village was declared eco-tourist village by the government of Uttarakhand on 2006. The Deori Tal trek is about 2.5 kms from here. We shall stay in Sari Village for the night.

Day 2: Trek from Sari village to Deoria Tal

Today would be the first day of the trek. This amazing small trek gives a bird-eye view of the Sari Village and its lush green paddy fields. The trek is not a difficult one as there is a well-laid path for the entire trail. There are small ascents on the way but it’s all manageable in this one. This is a short trek of 2-2.5 kms and takes about 2 hours to cover. Deoriatal is a perfect location for camping. There are many chances of doing some serious bird watching near the lake of Deoriatal.

The Deoriatal is a small lake surrounded by grasslands making it an ideal location for camping and star gazing. The serenity and desolation in this place makes it very tranquil.

On the second day we will stay at the Deoriatal for the night and dinner would be served at this campsite.

Day 3: Trek from Deoria Tal to Chopta

This trek is a trail through a dense jungle. The first one hour is an ascent after which it mostly becomes a steady and gradual climb mostly. After the initial climb, the trail goes through rhododendron and maple forest with the constant chirping of birds. Closer to Chopta on the trek lies the Akash Kamini waterfall which is known as one of the healthiest and purest Himalayan water sources. We will rest here for a while and relax before resuming the trek.

The trail is also known as Kedarnath Sanctuary Trail. After a trek of 16 km which we will cover in about 7-8 hours, we will find ourselves arriving at Chopta. The magnificent view from this point makes one feel like the entire trek was extremely worth it. We will set up our camps in Chopta and stay in the camps overnight.

Day 4: Trek from Chopta to Tungnath temple

We will start early in the dawn and witness a mesmerizing sunrise ahead of us at the Tunganath top. The trail from Chopta to the temple is again a well-defined one that takes about 7-8 hours to complete and stretches over 8 km. This is a difficult hike to begin with. This trek is full of sharp turns and steep ascents. After going on for a few kilometers we will be able to witness the enchanting view of Chandrashila ahead on the trek.

Upon reaching the summit a 360 degree view of the Garhwal and Kumaon mountains like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Kamet etc await to surprise the trekkers with a view like non other.

In the day ahead of us, we will explore the valley and watch a beautiful sunset in peace. This would be followed by a dinner and the camps would be set up early to let everyone relax.

Day 5: Early morning trek- Tungnath to Chandrashila Peak, trek back to Chopta, drive back to Dehradun

The fifth and the last day of this trek is one that would begin early as we start our trek by 4 AM in the morning. Chandrashila is a 1.5 km trek from Tungnath but is a tough one with an inclination of about 75 degrees. The weather would also be extremely cold right in the morning. Although this is a short trek it takes time because it is a difficult one to cover.

Upon reaching there we shall witness the most enchanting sunrise with first raise of the sun falling on the Chaukhamba peak leaving everyone astounded. This is a moment that makes one forget about everything else and one just soaks in the richness of nature. Chandrashila gives a clear view of the Nanda Devi peak which is the highest mountain located entirely in India.

After the sunrise and after spending some time at the peak we would start hiking down to Chopta as it is a long trek to cover. We shall trek down to Chopta and leave for our drive to Dehradun on the same day from Chopta biding goodbye to this wonderful and blissful trek.
